Camarillo Believes Machida Represents New Era

Ernest Hemingway said its only the details of a man’s life and how it ends that distinguish him from another. Dave Camarillo, originator of Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu, and head grappling coach at the famed American Kickboxing Academy, took that idea and applied it to mixed martial arts. Yes, its fun to watch. Its exciting. For many, its an obsession. However, that doesn’t mean any of us understand it. Camarillo expounds on the current climate of MMA in his latest blog, where he compares the fighter versus the martial artist.

The martial artist–in our case, the mixed martial artist–satisfies the internal conflict we all have as human beings, according to Camarillo. The fight satiates our innate desire to act as the primal animals we are at our core while the values that are learned from preparing and participating in the fight instills values like discipline and humility that are commendable, allowing us to operate and excel as members of society. The fighter, on the other hand, appreciates the tenants of fighting greatly without employing its philosophical components like honor and respect that pushes the martial artist to a greater understanding of the fight, thereby endowing them with the ability to reach their full potential.

Now, that’s a lot to handle, and I hope I’m understanding and doing Camarillo’s blog justice, but its really something fans should consider. Do they want to see fighters or martial artist? Camarillo writes:

“I don’t believe Lyoto’s UFC title was a great accomplishment for Machida as much as it was a great accomplishment for the Ultimate Fighting Championships, its fans and fellow Martial Artists! It is truly the Machida Era of MMA. It is truly the era of The Martial Artist! And I bow!”

That’s some loaded sentiment. First, the idea that Machida’s accomplishment is greater than winning the light heavyweight title has been a contentious issue since he knocked out Rashad Evans in under ten minutes. Machida’s declaration that “karate is back!” incited this debate, which is good to have. When he said karate, he meant the art itself, but it takes on a larger meaning since the popular understanding of karate is intertwined with philosophical tenants. What if “The Ultimate Fighter” became less about ego clashes and more about self-discovery? That’s a question the win raises about the direction of the sport.

Second, fans and critics are expecting Machida’s grip to hang on to the top for a long time. That represents an implicit shift that the martial artist trumps the fighter. Others are awaiting for Machida to unravel. The two sides embody the split Camarillo discusses when he differentiates between the fighter and the martial artist.

Whatever side you find yourself on, realize that Camarillo is right. That’s not to say a fighter cannot be successful, but the martial artist has a greater chance to achieve his or her goals because its a lifestyle, not a hobby or profession. As we look down the list of MMA’s major champions: Miguel Torres, Mike Thomas Brown, B.J. Penn, Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, and Frank Mir-Brock Lesnar-Fedor Emelianenko, we find that the majority of the world’s best are already martial artists and not fighters. Aside from Lesnar and Mike Thomas Brown, I’ve heard every single one of those fighters identify themselves as martial artists. While its true for most champions, this particular crop appears to be unstoppable. So the shift is already in place. It’s just that Machida got on the microphone in front of the whole world at the right time, in the right place. That’s exactly what happens when ideas become earthquakes.

In MMA’s modern era, only three champions have earned the gold with an unblemished record: Tim Sylvia, Rashad Evans, and Lyoto Machida. If the Brazilian disposes of challengers for more than one title defense (an increasingly difficult proposition at 205-pounds and more than Sylvia and Evans did), it solidifies Camarillo’s thoughts, Joe Rogan’s thoughts, and this blog. However, potential energy has already become kinetic.

The martial arts movement in mixed martial arts–a sport marred by identity crisis since its inception because styles compete for supremacy–revolutionizes MMA because it takes it away from the hands of vale tudo tape traders and places it in the hands of the family, whether it be the little girl or the grandpa. In that sense, MMA will cease to be beer drinkin’ cigar smokin’ sport and become universal.

The fight for acceptance would be over. Instead of cultures, states, communities, and parents shying away from MMA, they would embrace it. It sounds idealistic, but who has ever protested the opening of a karate gym? That’s simply because no one would denounce values like respect, honor and determination–the tenants of the martial artist in Camarillo’s view.
