Kaci Battaglia might look like an innocent pop singer, but according to her Sirius Satellite radio smash, “Crazy Possessive,” the seductive brunette doesn’t have a problem kicking another chick’s ass if she got out of line. After all, the 21-year-old Florida native is a certified kickboxing instructor and a black belt candidate in American Martial Arts under kickboxing world champion Jim Graden. Sorry, Lady Gaga, but Kaci Battaglia is the toughest female in the music world.
FIGHT!: When did you get started in martial arts?
I started when I was 9 years old, and I continued for a few years just doing traditional martial arts for kids being trained by Jim Graden. I trained with him as a child, then went off and did my music thing. Around 15 years old, I came back and said, “I wanna continue training,” but he got out of that system and was doing Cardio Karate and different venues for weight loss and fitness. And then for people who really wanted to learn how to fight.
FIGHT!: What’s Cardio Karate? Is it something similar to Billy Blanks’ Tae Bo videos?
Cardio Karate is really fun! It’s 45-minute sets of different steps with punches, kicks and blocks, and things of that sort. It’s set to a beat, and it transitions very smoothly. It’s definitely high energy. There is also training to fight and defend yourself, and more fitness [and] weight-loss [programs] – that type of thing. So I was taking his classes where you really learn how to fight and defend yourself, and also taking his fitness classes. At the same time, I was training to become an instructor also because I wanted to get fit and learn things. So obviously, I had some catching up to do.
FIGHT!: Are you saying you weren’t fit before?
No. It’s not like I was huge or way out of shape, but there’s a difference between being really healthy and really fit … like fighting ready, kinda fit. Not saying I’m gonna go out and fight anyone, but it was nice to get back into real shape. I was [a] certified [kickboxing instructor] at 15 and taught there for a while, and then music kinda swept me away again before I got my black belt. I would like to go back and get that.
FIGHT!: Aside from Cardio Karate, have you trained in any other fighting disciplines?
I did take some Jiu-Jitsu. I don’t know much of it, but I’d love to take more. It’s pretty crazy that you just choke people out in class or they tap out (laughs). It’s great.
FIGHT!: Did you ever have to use your lethal talent to fend off any enemies … or some neighbor who kept annoying you?
It’s funny because when I started doing karate, my mom put me in karate because I was very shy and was kinda bullied in school. She’s like, “Enough of this! You’re going to karate to learn how to defend yourself.” And there were so many great things you could learn like patience, self-control, and things of that nature. But it also taught me how to defend myself, and it came in handy when some of the boys said, “Oh, yeah? You think you can fight? Think you can fight me?” and they’d go to kick me and I’d be able to block things. It’s like, “God! Leave me alone!” The only other time I had to kinda apply it growing up was maybe there were some girls feeling a bit challenged (laughs).
FIGHT!: So are you trying to be an MMA fighter?
Oh Lord, no! I really enjoy it, and you never know when you’re gonna need to handle things. Sometimes it can be a bit scary traveling as a young female, especially if you’re traveling abroad. It’s nice to know that if I got caught in a sticky situation, that I could at least be able to handle myself.
FIGHT!: We heard you opened up for O-Town in the past. Are you the reason why they’re not together anymore? Did you beat them up?
No! I hung out with them (laughs). They were cool with me. It was not me!
