Meant to post this earlier, but there was madness – absolute madness – going on last week. Oh well. Anyways, your BFF recently spoke to Mackens Semerzier for FIGHT! Magazine about test driving Lamborghinis and watching Jose Aldo fights on YouTube.

But aside all of that, we also talked about him being a world champ and where he would put his future WEC Featherweight Title.

Read on …

Mackens Semerzier: I’m one of those guys where if I could just get paid to fight and not have to worry about too much … like I don’t need to go out and get into ‘this’ club, or hang out with ‘these’ people. That’s not what I do it for. I got a family of four, ya know what I’m saying? I [gotta take care of the] people that I’m responsible for and this is a great way to make a living, as well as live out my dream. If they told me, “Hey, you can A) fight and have a great time fighting or B) take care of your family, I’m always gonna take care of my family. I think anybody that would say different would be irresponsible. So things like that don’t really get me caught up too much in the hype. I just wanna win. I wanna beat this guy and move onto the next guy. And I wanna hold onto the belt one day and throw it in my closet, show my kids, let them play with it, toss it to the side, and go “Aiight” and move on.

Bear Frazer: Time out! You wanna win the title and just throw it in the closet? No mounting it over the chimney or something?

Mackens Semerzier: Yeah. Like when I was wrestling, no one in my family saw me wrestle. I think my uncle saw me one time and my sister saw me once, and walked in halfway. So I was never [that] kid, or when I win a tournament or get a trophy, I never ran home to show my parents ’cause they were just happy that I was staying out of trouble and going to school, and that I was gonna graduate on time. That was the priority. The little things like that I miss when I was a kid, so now I wanna show my kids, ‘You know what? When you get some accomplishment, come show daddy. We appreciate it.’ So they always wanna see – I don’t let them watch my fights – but they always wanna see. ‘Hey dad, where’s your belt?’ And I’ll be like, ‘It’s in closet.’ They’ll go into the closet and pull out the belts I won from previous events, and I used to give them my medals from jiu-jitsu tournaments, but they started fighting over it. But it’s the same thing, man. One victory achieved is to be forgotten, that’s what Rickson said and I don’t wanna be rockin’ it around like … what’s that’s big dudes name? Big 7-footer?

Bear Frazer: Tim Sylvia?

Mackens Semerzier: Yeah, Tim Sylvia used to wear it everywhere! I don’t need that man! That’s kinda taking it overboard. He’d wear that to the fights, and it’s like, ‘Come on.’ I understand that you won something, you got it, but now you gotta think about, ‘What’s the next step? How do I keep a hold of this motherucka?’ You fall in love with [it], then you’re gonna forget about everything else. So I’d like to own it. It’s a real pretty belt, but it’s one of those things where I wouldn’t put it up on the mantle. Maybe after I’m done fighting and everything’s over, and I’m chillin’, rubbing my belly, had a couple of McDonald’s [hamburgers] or something, or then it’s like, “Yeah. I used to be a fighter. Look at my poster. Look at this, look at that,” and then it’s time to enjoy. But right now, I don’t have a nail in my wall. I don’t have pictures hanging up. All of my stuff is in the closet. I just live real, real simple because I haven’t reached my goal yet. It’s one of those things [where] when I get it, I don’t think I’ll be prancing around with it. I’ll probably put it in the closet with my other belts and get back to work.

Even though Semerzier took a slight little detour with his loss to Deividas Taurosevicius this past weekend, he will come back stronger than ever. As he told me last night, “I’ll be back on the grind soon. I’m gonna bring a new attitude to the fight game.”
