Johnny Plague will watch the occasional UFC pay per view event, but he isn’t hardcore into the sport to where he trolls the MMA websites searching for the latest news on Chuck Liddell. He has, however, trained in a few disciplines when he was younger and chances are if he wasn’t the lead vocalist of the metal-savvy Winds Of Plague, then he’d probably commence his training as a samurai.
FIGHT! Magazine: I hear you got a background in martial arts.
Johnny Plague: Yes and no. Like growing up, that’s all I did and I’m still very interested in different cultures and stuff about it. But I don’t follow the American MMA and stuff like that. I watch it every now and again, but I don’t quite follow it. I’m more, as you could tell from past artwork, into like the whole “samurai” and stuff like that.
FIGHT! Magazine: Fair enough. So what disciplines have you practiced?
Johnny Plague: I got a black belt in American Karate when I was 12. I was pretty young, and I did Muy Thai Kickboxing for a couple of years, and then I did this crazy, this insane samurai classes for a little bit. I couldn’t even hang that long. They were too intense for me. But I did that for a little while.
FIGHT! Magazine: So did you have swords and, like, play kill people?
Johnny Plague: It was very, extremely traditional and disciplined classes, and I was a little younger, but now, I think I would appreciate it a lot more. Every single time you have to sit there, clean the blade, put all the ointments on and do the same strike for a hundred times in a row. That was nuts.
FIGHT! Magazine: Was the sword real? You still have it?
Johnny Plague: Oh yeah. I think it’s called a wakizashi, so it’s a smaller samurai sword and yes, I still have it. It’s awesome!
FIGHT! Magazine: It’s crazy those were given to kids.
Johnny Plague: Well they definitely didn’t give [a wakizashi] to me. You had to buy it.
FIGHT! Magazine: So were there any lunatic kids in your class?
Johnny Plague: I’m sure there were plenty of ‘em.
